Professional Oboe & Music Theory Mentorship

I’m Phil Rashkin, a professional musician and mentor based on the Upper West Side in New York City. For over 15 years, I have helped my students receive acceptance into distinguished programs and develop a lifelong love of music.

I teach a variety of students, including:

  1. High School Students who would like to attend a dream academic college or music conservatory for college.

    • My private students have been accepted to Harvard, Brown, Stanford, MIT, Caltech, Princeton, Yale, Manhattan School of Music (awarded $100,000 scholarship), and the Eastman School of Music (awarded $200,000 scholarship).

2. Elementary and Junior High Students who would like to attend an arts high school, distinguished pre-college program, or summer music program.

  • My private students have attended LaGuardia High School, Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, The Special Music School, Juilliard Pre-College, Mannes Pre-College, Manhattan School of Music Pre-College, and Boston University Tanglewood Institute.

3. Adult students who would like to discover the joy of music and take their skills to the next level.

  • My private students have written and performed original songs, learned to read sheet music and play music by ear, discovered the joy of composing their own music, and produced a performance of a new musical.

  • Beyond the studio, I specialize in helping adult musicians find their place in the New York music scene. I have successfully placed students in local community orchestras, rock bands, and chamber music programs, ensuring that your musical growth leads to real-world performance opportunities.

  • Oboe and English Horn Performance

    • Focus: Reed-making, technical mastery, and audition preparation.

  • Comprehensive Music Theory & Composition

    • Focus: Mastery of musical literacy, harmonic analysis, and preparation for AP Music Theory & college-level theory placement exams. I teach theory as a living language; once a student masters the mechanics of music, they unlock the ability to compose original works.

  • Integrated Piano & Ear Training

    • Focus: Building the "Total Musician" capable of excelling in conservatory-level placements or performing music by ear.

  • College Applications for Musicians
